by Diane Penna

With all the decorating and design shows on television lately, Interior Design has become one of the hottest careers in the Visual Communications field.  You too can earn a degree in Interior Design, and now it’s easier than ever with online degree programs available from several major art schools and universities.

Most online art schools offer a B.F.A. (Bachelor of Fine Arts) in Interior Design, which consists of between 120-180 units, or four to five years of instruction.  Almost half of those credits are made of up of general education courses involving English, History, and Social Studies.  Most programs require a core set of preparation courses such as basic drawing, color and form, three-dimensional design, and art history.

The majority the online Interior Design program is made up of courses that are hands-on, design-intensive taught by professionals in the field.  Such courses include Drafting Technology, Textiles, Lighting, Commercial Practices, and Residential Design.  The remainder of the degree program is usually made up of art electives.

With the recommended software and art supplies, one earning an online degree gets the same career-focused, intensive program as those attending in person.  It is possible to earn a B.F.A. in Interior Design online, and at your own pace, too.
